Things to do in Torrevieja in winter

Torrevieja is a really popular destination with tourists during the summer months and is well known for its beautiful beaches and busy nightlife. However, if you’re looking for some winter sun, Torrevieja still has plenty of things to do in the cooler months.

Winter temperatures in Torrevieja are mild, with fewer crowds, and a much quieter atmosphere, making it a great place for a winter holiday.

We live around 20 minutes away from Torrevieja and often head their during the quieter months to stroll along the promenade, grab a drink or lunch, or even sit on the beach and have a paddle.

Whether you’re looking for beach walks, cultural experiences, outdoor activities, or just a place to relax, here’s a list of things to do in Torrevieja in winter…

Enjoy the winter sun

Daytime temperatures in Torrevieja during the winter months typically range from 10 to 20°C which is ideal for exploring the town and nearby areas without the sweltering heat of summer. It’s often warm enough to sit on the beach or at one of the bars along the promenade. Just make sure to pack a light jacket for the morning and evenings, as temperatures can be quite cool once the sun goes down or if you’re sat in the shade.

Stroll along the promenade

One of the best ways to enjoy Torrevieja in winter is by taking a nice, long stroll along the promenade, The Paseo Marítimo. This walk is lined with palm trees and has stunning views of the beach, perfect for a morning or evening walk. It’s a nice, flat walk so is perfect for all ages, pushchairs, wheelchairs etc and you can stop at one of the many cafés or bars for a drink and tapas along the way.

Explore the Salt Lakes

Torrevieja is famous for its stunning salt lakes, which are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including flamingos which are common in the part of Spain.

  • Laguna Rosa (Pink Lake): If you’re in the area you must pay a visit to the unique pink salt lake. The best time to see it’s amazing colour is during the early morning or late afternoon – you might even spot some flamingos here.
  • Laguna Salada de Torrevieja: The larger salt lake is also worth a visit. You can walk around the lake for miles, spot some wildlife and enjoy the peaceful surroundings away from the busy town.

Discover local culture and history

Winter is a great time to explore the history and culture of Torrevieja without the crowds and queues.

  • Visit the Torrevieja Museum of Sea and Salt: You can learn about the town’s history as a salt-producing hub and its maritime heritage in this museum. The museum features some fascinating exhibits, including artifacts from the fishing industry and the local salt trade.
  • Church of the Immaculate Conception: Located in the town center, this beautiful church is worth a visit for its stunning architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Have a seat and take a minute to admire the inside of the church including the intricate details on the altar.

Try the local cuisine

The Costa Blanca is well known for it’s food and during the winter months you can get a table at your favourite restaurants without having to queue!

  • Tapas and Seafood: Enjoy the local delicacies by sampling traditional tapas at one of the many bars and restaurants in the town. Don’t miss out on fresh seafood dishes, especially paella. Restaurants like Restaurante El Mesón or La Taberna de Don Juan are great options.
  • Churros and chocolate: Stop in the Valor Café to sample it’s traditional homemade hot chocolate and churros, Valor chocolate is made right here on the Costa Blanca so you’ll be trying something truly local.
  • Warm drinks: Warm up with a hot chocolate or a traditional horchata (a refreshing drink made from tiger nuts) at a local café overlooking the beach.

Participate in local events and festivals

During winter in Torrevieja there’s also plenty of local events and festivals to join in with.

  • Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes): Celebrated on January 6th, this festival is one of the most important in Spain. On the evening of the 5th, the Three Kings arrive in the town as part of a colourful parade, throwing out sweets to the crowd.
  • Dia del cerdo: Day of the Pig is held in La Mata at the end of January and is basically a giant beach BBQ where everyone is given free pork, bread and wine and can cook on the BBQs set up around the beach.
  • Carnival: In February Torrevieja comes alive for Carnival, with parades, music, and bright, colourful costumes, providing a lively atmosphere in the town for the whole week.

Explore nature and outdoor activities

Torrevieja has plenty of outdoor activities to try, and winter is the ideal time to take part as it’s much too hot during the summer!

  • Hiking and biking: Explore the beautiful natural parks surrounding Torrevieja, such as Parque Natural de las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja. The park features lots of walking and biking trails, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
  • Golfing: For golf enthusiasts, winter is an excellent time to hit the courses. Torrevieja and the surrounding area is home to several golf courses that offer great conditions and beautiful views.

Have a beach day

Even during the winter there can be plenty of opportunities for a beach day, though you might find the sea a little bit chilly! Grab your towels and chairs, and head to one of the main beaches in Torrevieja if you want to be close to the shops and restaurants, or if you prefer a quieter beach, head to the beautiful sandy beach of La Mata.

Watch a movie

If you fancy watching a movie, especially if you’re unlucky enough to visit Torrevieja when it rains, you can find a cinema just outside the town centre behind the Habaneras shopping centre.

Each week there’s one movie showing in English with Spanish subtitles, look for the film labelled VOSE – the rest will be dubbed in Spanish.

Shop til you drop

For those after some retail therapy, you have Habaneras shopping centre close to the town centre, or the bigger La Zenia Boulevard around 15 minutes away. Both of these have popular high street chains as well as restaurants, bars, and free parking.
