Fonts D’Algar – swim in waterfalls on the Costa Blanca
There aren’t many places where you can swim in waterfalls, but you can here on the Costa Blanca at Les Fonts D’Algar.
Fonts D’Algar, or Algar Waterfalls, is another one of our favourite places that we’ve visited in the Alicante Province, and have been several times at different times of the year and it never disappoints.

About Fonts D’Algar
The Fonts D’Algar waterfalls, located in the province of Alicante, Spain, are a beautiful natural attraction very popular with visitors to the area. The waterfalls are located in a valley surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
Is Fonts D’Algar worth visiting?
Yes, definitely! Fonts D’Algar is definitely worth a visit for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking for a quiet escape from the busy cities of Benidorm and Alicante. The waterfalls are a peaceful place to relax, surrounded by clear natural pools and cascading waterfalls. It’s somewhere a bit different to the usual busy beaches, city centres, and amusement parks found in this area.
What is there to do at the Algar Waterfalls?
You can easily spend the day at Fonts D’Algar. Obviously the main thing to do is to swim in the waterfalls and natural pools. The water is crystal clear and very refreshing (absolutely freezing!) so it’s an ideal place to cool down during the very hot Spanish summers.
As well as the pools at the base of the waterfalls, there are some very shallow areas suitable for paddling, platforms to jump off into the water, and for more competent swimmers there are narrow ‘rivers’ between the rocks where you can swim further into the mountains.
There are lots of pathways and bridges where you can see the different waterfalls and pools. For anyone old enough to remember, the main waterfall that you’ll see as you enter was the location for that famous Timotei advert!
When you’ve had enough of swimming, you can go on a hike along the scenic trails that wind through surrounding area. These paths offer some stunning views of the waterfalls and mountain landscape, with some easy trails perfect for families with younger children.
You can’t eat by the waterfalls but you can stop for a picnic in one of the designated areas where there’s benches, plenty of shade, a playpark, and a herb garden to wander through.
For those seeking a more thrilling day out, there are local companies who offer adventure activities here like quad biking, canyoning or kayaking. You can find out more about these tours and excursions at GetYourGuide.
Just outside the entrance to the waterfalls there are five restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner, many offering a traditional paella as their specialty. Two of these (Casa Marcos and La Cascada) even have swimming pools for customers which is an ideal way to finish your day out.
If you have time, it’s worth paying a visit the nearby town of Callosa d’en Sarrià where you can stroll through the streets, explore local shops, and pick up some fresh produce or unique crafts at the local market.
Tips for visiting the Fonts D’Algar waterfalls
- Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on uneven ground, as the paths to the waterfalls can be quite rocky.
- Bring a swimming costume, towel and water shoes if you want to take a dip in the natural pools.
- Don’t forget your camera! The waterfalls and the surrounding landscapes provide some stunning photo opportunities.
- Consider visiting on weekdays or during the early morning hours to avoid crowds, especially during peak tourist season.
- If you’re not bothered about swimming in the waterfalls, out of season can be a good time to visit as its much quieter and you can wander around and get some good photos without lots of crowds.
- A visit to Fonts D’Algar is often done as a joint trip with Guadalest, however if you have the time we’d recommend doing the two as separate trips so you have time to fully appreciate both destinations.
- Finally, buy your Fonts D’Algar tickets in advance to allow you to skip the queue – it can get very, very long in peak season and you won’t want to queue up in the heat.
