If you’ve spent time on the Costa Blanca South but haven’t yet visited the beautiful town of Guardamar del Segura, then you’ve missed a gem!

This seaside town near Alicante has so much to offer, from beaches to history, it’s one of our favourite places in the area to spend time.

Where is Guardamar del Segura?

Located on the south of the Costa Blanca, between Santa Pola and Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura is approximately a 45 minute drive from Alicante airport and is easily accessible with the excellent local road network.

Is Guardamar del Segura worth visiting?

Yes absolutely! For the most beautiful beaches on the Costa Blanca, Guardamar del Segura is worth a visit. You’ll have no problems spending a week or two here (or longer!) as there’s so much to do, plus some amazing weather to do it in! From relaxing to dining out, history to entertainment, Guardamar del Segura has something for everyone.

Relax on the beach

Guardamar del Segura is home to some stunning sandy beaches. You could easily spend every day soaking up the sun on the golden sand and swimming in the crystal-clear sea. The beaches here stretch for miles so you can take a lovely leisurely walk along the coast in both directions. In the summer months you will find several Chiringuitos (beach bars) dotted along the beaches of Guardamar, the perfect place for a drink and tapas with an amazing sea view.

Explore the sand dunes and pine forests

The natural beaches of Guardamar del Segura beaches are located among the sand dunes, with the pine forests close by. Head towards Playa Los Viveros to take a stroll through the beautiful sand dunes and pine forests of the nearby Alfonso XIII Park, which offers scenic trails and picnic areas.

Visit the Reina Sofia Park

One of the most beautiful parks in the area, Reina Sofia Park in the heart of Guardamar del Segura has it all. Under the shade of the pine trees you’ll find a children’s play park, lakes with turtles, ducks, geese, and swans, paths taking you around the park where you’ll spot peacocks, red squirrels and more. There are also plenty of picnic benches to sit in the shade and enjoy the peaceful setting.

Discover Guardamar Castle

Somewhere that should definitely be on your list of places to see in Guardamar is the town’s castle. Set back from the beach on a hill overlooking the town you’ll find the ruins of the Guardamar Castle, known locally as the Castillo de Guardamar. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the town and coastline. There are also guided tours on certain days as a lot of work has gone into restoring the castle recently.

Sample the local cuisine

Along the promenade and in the town you will find lots of different restaurants to try. Traditional dishes in this area include arroz a banda (rice with fish) and paella, and being a seaside town you can find many restaurants serving fresh seafood. Some of our favourite restaurants in Guardamar include Valenti Playa 1964, Jaime Playa, and La Cañada Playa.

Enjoy water sports

If you’re a fan of water sports you are in luck. In the summer months you’ll schools along the beaches offering lessons in windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding and more, as well as the opportunity to rent kayaks and boards. In Guardamar Marina there is also a water sports school and hire.

Have a drink at the Sky Bar

If you are visiting in the summer when the evenings stay light until around 10pm, you must visit the Sky Bar for a drink, one of the top tourist attractions in Guardamar. This Bar is located at the top of the Hotel Meridional, over looking the beautiful beach of Playa La Roqueta. Enjoy a cocktail and take in the view.

Visit the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum

If you’d like to learn more about the history and culture of the region you can pay a visit to the Guardamar Archaeological Museum, a great place if you ever to have to find somewhere to spend a rainy day in Guardamar! Here you can learn about the area’s past, including its Roman and Moorish heritage.

Explore the Marina

Guardamar del Segura has a lovely marina where you can admire the boats and yachts, take a leisurely stroll along the harbor, and stop for a drink or a meal. You can either drive to the marina and park up (only €1 for 24 hours) or you can walk from the center of Guardamar in 15-20 minutes.

Attend local festivals

Make sure to check if there are any local fiestas happening during your visit, especially if you are visiting at Christmas, Easter, or during the summer. Guardamar del Segura hosts various celebrations throughout the year. The Moors and Christians Festival, San Juan bonfires, and the Semana Santa and Three Kings parades are just some of the best fiestas in Guardamar to check out.

Explore the Segura River Park

The Segura River Park is a natural park that stretches along the Rio Segura (Segura River). You can enjoy nature walks, biking trails, and observe the local flora and fauna along the way. If you want to rent a bike, you can do so from various places in the area.
